Information

  • The chief is appointed by the Mayor and Aldermen, the Assistant Chief is chosen by the
officers and firefighters board then approved by the Mayor / Board. All officers are tested
then come before the officers review board. Senior Firefighter is a level II with more
    time in grade.

  • This department is a paid per call department, most of the personnel with more
than five years and many over 15 to 20 years.

  • We are toned out by the Noxubee 911 service, which is very capable in working with
us. EMS is from "Emrgi-Stat" Ambulance Service, a paramedic / ALS service, who assist
us in the training of our EMR's. The EMR is under the direction of EMS Paramedics.

  • We have a 50% Response / Training rule which is under the oversight of the
firefighter's board which no chief officer may be a member.

  • The City of Macon Mayor and Alderman board are very aware and therefore supportive of
their department's commitment to training. They provide well for us as is evidenced
by the equipment. They do ask (demand) that it be cared for.

  • The department meets on the second and forth Tuesday. The forth is for maintenance
of equipment. This keeps the firefighters familiar with where the small
tools are stored. All applicants must submit an application and
    go through a background check.

  • The population of The City of Macon is about 3500 at the present. Our response area is a
five-mile radius generally outside the corporate area. Within the response area is one
sawmill operation, three textile plants, one feed mill, one equipment manufacturing plant,
one plastic manufacturing plant as well as several small manufacturing operations and small
shop fitters with about 20% sub standard housing.

  • There are fire hydrants in the immediate city limits as well as a few outside. Outside this
water supply we can place on scene 4500 gallons while another tanker district comes in at
which time we set up a shuttle operation.

  • Presently we are exploring the possibility of a heavy rescue equipped van, as there is none
within 100 miles. This van would be equipped outside of the municipal budget, so financing
will be a problem, any advice, anything?? want to donate something??? I have a list.
