A study was conducted
which determined that approximately 105,000 tons per year
of solid waste are generated in the region. Each of the
three solid waste production categories (residential, commercial,
and industrial) is producing approximately 35,000 tons.
With the disposal of solid waste becoming more of a problem
than ever before in our history, and with the ever-increasing
federal regulations, the need for managing the disposal
of the collected waste becomes imperative.
The GTPDD supported the development of
a Regional Solid Waste Master Plan to
develop a model for solid waste management
in our region. In
August of 1991, the Golden Triangle Regional Solid Waste Management Authority
(the "Authority") was incorporated. The Authority coordinates
solid waste management for 6 counties. The Golden Triangle Planning and
Development District is proud to have assisted in the planning and start-up
phases of this Authority.
